This Thursday.

Transit agencies across the country will use the day to promote their lines of transportation for commuting to work rather than privately owned vehicles.

Transit Facts For National Dump The Pump Day
1.   Since January 2003, gas prices have increased by 100 percent.
2.   By using public transit instead of driving to commute to work, a person could save between $2,100 and $2,868 in Buffalo Niagara annually depending on distance traveled each day.
3.   Transit use saves more than 855 million gallons of gasoline every year.
4.   These gasoline savings are equal to more than twice the energy consumed by the U.S. apparel industry, or half the energy burned by the U.S. paper pulp industry or by all U.S. manufacturers of computers and electronic equipment.
5.   If Americans used public transportation for roughly 10 percent of daily travel needs, the United States would reduce its dependence on imported oil from the Persian Gulf by more than 40 percent.
6.   During the past 10 years, U.S. public transportation use has grown by 25.1% — at a faster rate than highway travel (22.5%).
7.   A full Metro rail car takes 150 vehicles off the road. A full Metro bus takes 50 cars off the road. Pollution (reduction per passenger over a single occupancy vehicle): Nitrogen Oxides: 25%, Carbon Monoxide: 80%, Hydrocarbons: 90% . . . in short, a much cleaner environment.

Too bad, you can’t really get everywhere you want to go while depending only on public transportation, unless you have an extra 2-3 hours to spare. Oh yeah, and amost every single employment position I have thought about applying for, requires personal transportation. And have you ever TRIED to get out to Amherst on a bus? Reasons why I would rather never leave the city. Except of course, the one I am in now.

I actually have gone to Amherst from Elmwood Ave, back in the old army days, when I lived on Elmwood (yikes, that was 10 years ago I was moving in at this time). Had to go to Wegman’s before I had my Tops check cashing card. It sucked.
