Going organic…

May 5, 2008

I know, I know…it’s expensive to buy produce these days. Tears stream down my face when I empty out the *forgotten but had such high hopes for* refrigerator drawer and throw out dollar after dollar of now slimy gooky green spinach, spotty moldy cucumbers and itsy bisty shriveled up grapes. Such potential wasted.

However, in a concerted effort to be a healthier person (otherwise known as blogging about healthy food instead of getting up in the morning and actually walking…) I have come across this article which has helped me gain knowledge on a good place to start when choosing to spend more for organic produce.

12 Foods With High Amounts of Pesticides

  1. peaches
  2. strawberries
  3. apples
  4. spinach
  5. nectarines
  6. celery
  7. pears
  8. cherries
  9. potatoes
  10. sweet bell peppers
  11. raspberries
  12. grapes (imported)

To avoid pesticides altogether your best bet is to buy organic foods — definitely those on the above list, if not all fruits and veggies. If you’re not quite there yet, then you should wash and peel any of the above fruits and vegetables (that can be peeled) to reduce the amount of pesticides found on the food.

Have you tried using “green bags” yet? They were actually a “as seen on TV” item, but now you can get them at Bed, Bath and Beyond. I’ve been using them for about 5 months and they are great. They extend the lives of your fruits and veggies. I don’t throw away much produce anymore. Just don’t get the ones that have a ziploc top–for some reasons, those don’t work very well. In fact, by bananas shriveled up faster! The regular ones are great. My grapes last almost 2 weeks! I’ll send you some if you are interested!

I’m definitely planning on focusing on buying more organic as I go along

  3. Da—GREEN BAGS? I am sooooooo there! Thanks for the heads up! And my cabbage thanks you too. Bananas are just about the only thing in my house that have zero chance of becoming rotten, I love them so…

Lys- Thanks for the comment. I just checked out your blog and it is going right on over to the blogroll and feeder!!!

Tis been easier for me to concentrate more of buying organic now that I work for the local food co-op :)
