ATJ True Confessions: Media Disconnect

True Confession by All Things Jennifer.

I just deleted my News/Politics RSS Folder.

I’ve been finding myself more and more away from a computer and more and more not caring at all about being up to the minute with news. This has been going on for about a year I would assume…staying away from my love/hate politics addiction and just being more light-hearted and free. I’m sure it shows over here on the blog as well, not nearly as many opinionated rants these days.

Today after coming off a several day media disconnect (super busy short work week last week with two friends coming in from out-of-town to stay with me and a weekend full of events which led me exhausted and catching up with sleep the last few days…) I realized I didn’t even have any interest in scrolling down the 1,000+ items to “Mark All Read”  so I just selected all and…poof! Away went all the articles I didn’t browse!

AWAY!

Away…away…BUT WHAT DID I MISS? I MISSED SOMETHING I KNOW IT!

Shhhh.

Be quiet brain…just be…

Wait? What’s that I hear?

Quiet? Space to brea—-GOBACKANDREADTHOSEDELETEDFEEDS*—the?

*My brain tends to interrupt itself at times, sorry.

Of course most of my media disconnect this past week or so has been because I haven’t been in front of a computer. Yeah, it was weird for me not knowing what was happening but I gotta tell the truth…I didn’t really care. I felt a bit twitchy knowing I missed a weekend of what was going on our there in Facebook land and blog world but in the end, it felt good! Good enough for me to delete ALL unread posts today instead of spending time browsing during my lunch break!

I don’t expect this trend to continue of course, especially when I move out to the country and have 24hr cable access as well as wireless but for now. It is what it is.

All Things Jennifer on Facebook/Twitter

I should mention to ya’all that I do put status updates and assorted links on my All Things Jennifer Facebook page and All Things Jennifer Twitter page in addition to posts over here.

Are you following?

I add lots of updates to Facebook that don’t show up over here. In fact I don’t even put regular status updates on my personal Facebook page, I only use All Things Jennifer.

And Twitter? Well, when I do get in Tweeting moods I can text tweets…since I’m not a smartphone person at the time being (AND GOD HELP ME WHEN I DO HAVE THIS ACCESS AT MY FINGERTIPS.)

What does YOUR city smell like?

MY CITY SMELLS LIKE CHEERIOS!

“If people in America knew that Buffalo was the toasted oats headquarters of the world they would probably move here and take deep breaths by the downtown mills. “

My dearest friend Shannon who lives in Boston was in Buffalo this weekend and walked by this shirt at the Elmwood Festival of the Arts. She didn’t know my City smelled like Cheerios.

While downtown at Morriseys Pub before Great Big Sea we pointed out to Shannon where the Cheerios were made in Buffalo.

No Cheerios for you!

Shannon was very sad that the General Mills factory was closed and Buffalo did not smell like Cheerios. Next time Shannon, next time.

Kiss Jen on the Forehead: Arugh! I’ve Been Licked Again!

While waiting for Great Big Sea at the Harbor on Saturday night, He Who Makes Me Smile got a little sassy when going in for my favorite Jen photo pose (shaky hand reaching out to capture angled moment of fun!)

Chuck

Which sparked an idea in my head for a blog post! Recall Random People Wearing Jen’s Green Glasses on St. Patty’s Day? I decided to go with KISS ME ON THE FOREHEAD instead. And only to people I knew. Except apparently Shannon who is noticeably absent from the kissing/tonging action.

My cheat sheet to remember it all later.

Thursday Afternoon: Pick up Shannon from airport. Gabriel’s Gate meet BFF for dinner. Blue Monk for beers…late night. Sleep.

Saturday: Bidwell Farmers Market with Shannon. Cafe Aroma for Coffee. Shots of tequila before noon. Prosecco toast before Elmwood Festival. Blue Monk (hello, old friend!) Lloyd Taco Truck. Attempt to search for zombie crawl. Morrisey’s for grub. GREAT BIG SEA! Um…Old Pink…late night bed. Taxi ride home. Craaaaaaash.

Sunday: Brunch at Mythos with Shannon/BFF. Elmwood Festival of the Arts (for real this time not from the Blue Monk looking out.) Buffalo Irish Festival with the Leftovers! STOMACH HURTING FROM LODGED SALT POTATO AND LAUGHTER. Crash.

Monday: Wee small hours of the morning, Shannon leaves in her rental car to drive back to Boston (flight was canceled due to Irene.) Sad Jen. Lunch with BFF and ride to bus station to head back to Philly (bus early this morning canceled due to Irene.) Sad Jen. Exhausted. Getting ready to….crash.

Great Big Sea, Oh How I Love Thee!

Great Big Sea. I love this band so much.

AMAZING concert this weekend in Buffalo!

Ay, me boys!

I can’t count how many times I’ve seen this band, I did spend New Years this past year with them I recall…but this show…this show was one of their best…

Girls at Great Big Sea!

My voice is still pretty much dead from all that Making Of The Noise. And my body is sore from the Vertical Movement. And my liver, dead from the Old Black Rum. (Ok, Beer…) Love. Love. Love!

Ladies and gentlemen…Great Big Sea.

My Computer Hates Mornings

Ya’all know how I love mornings. Not.Even.A.Little.Bit. Coming off an insanely busy long weekend with friends and very little sleep and very poor healthy choices the idea of coming back to the office makes me want to hide under the covers instead.

Looks like my computer had the same idea, 10 minutes after you know TURNING THE THING ON everything was still spinning. 30 minutes later I called Mr. IT guy who said that everything is up and running on the network however, my computer is in need of some special attention.

Boo.

Did I mention I hate mornings and I’m exhausted?

Media Hype, Hype?

Not sure what I dislike more…the media hype about an upcoming event or the post-media-hype hype story when the event doesn’t occur.

I’ve been pretty much offline since Thursday with friends from Boston and Philly in town and having waaaaay too much fun and zero access to media. No computer. No radio. No news. Nothing. Until this morning, where the story is apparently the non-story. I might throw the radio out the window.

All I know is both my friends from out of town had to figure out alternative transportation home.

I hope everyone out there is ok.

Any news? I have 4 days worth of catching up to do!

They’re Talking About Earthquakes! (But none for me…)

Raise your hand if you DIDN’T FEEL the earthquake so I don’t feel alone over here!

Browsing along the Facebook..a few minutes ago. Suddenly the posts appear!

Earthquake!

Was that an Earthquake?

#earthquake #earthquake #earthquake

Wait a minute. Not just in Buffalo? DC? Philly? NYC? VA Beach? Cleveland?

I make the rookie mistake of going to Google where the only thing I find is…Rare Strong Earthquake Hits Colorado

Um, no.

Of course I immediately go to Twitter.  Which obviously confirms that everyone I follow on Twitter follows Twitter because every single Tweet is about the EARTHQUAKE.

A few minutes later…USGS is reporting a 5.8 earthquake epicenter NW of Richmond VA.

Social Media. I love you.

I still wonder how it happens that some people FEEL IT and some people DON’T. I mean, a friend of mine who was DRIVING IN RICHMOND said she didn’t feel it. So strange.

I just hope everyone  is ok…

Now, the important question. How long until an annoying “I survived the earthquake” page pops up on Facebook? God help us if someone makes it a GROUP and starts adding people. Or even worse…FOURSQUARE.

(Damn, I just posted this and saw on Twitter.)

I’m at 2011 Buffalo Earthquake

UGH. Social Media. Sometimes I hate you too, I really, really hate you.

Randomments

I love doing these posts. I save up links for a while and then bring them all together in one edition.

However I fear the awesome sauce of most of these links are being lost when people don’t you know CLICK the links. And I see how many people aren’t clicking the links…

Maybe I should start individually posting these links instead.

Thoughts?

And now…Randomments. (Edition #34!)
